Centrifugal Compressors: How Large Chiller Plants Move Serious Tonnage

An impeller instead of a squeeze — the turbomachine at the heart of the biggest chiller plants, what 'surge' means, and why modern oil-free designs changed the game.

A different way to compress

Every other compressor type traps gas and squeezes it. A centrifugal compressor instead flings refrigerant vapor outward through a spinning impeller — like a pump wheel — converting velocity into pressure. That turbomachinery approach scales beautifully: one impeller assembly can move tonnage that would take racks of positive-displacement machines, which is why centrifugals own the large water-cooled chiller market, typically from a few hundred tons up.

Surge — the word to know

Centrifugals have one behavior no other compressor shares: surge. When head pressure climbs too high for the impeller to push against — classically from fouled condenser tubes or cooling tower problems — flow momentarily reverses with a characteristic whoosh and shudder. Repeated surge destroys bearings and impellers. It is also almost always preventable: surge is the plant telling you the condenser side needs attention, which is why tower water treatment and tube cleaning are centrifugal life insurance.

Oil-free magnetic bearings

The biggest development in decades: centrifugal compressors riding on magnetic bearings — the shaft levitates in a magnetic field, spins at very high speed, and needs no oil at all. No oil means no oil returns, no oil-fouled heat exchange surfaces, and standout part-load efficiency. They've moved centrifugal technology down into the 60-to-300-ton range that screws and scrolls used to own, and they're worth evaluating in any chiller replacement study.

Maintaining a centrifugal plant

Annual condenser tube cleaning and eddy-current testing, refrigerant and oil analysis (on oiled machines), vibration monitoring, purge-unit service on low-pressure machines, and controls calibration — centrifugal maintenance is a discipline, and a maintained machine runs 25 to 30 years.
